Winery & Architecture

The design and concept were the ambitions of Mark and Lisa Mazzoni from their early days walking the vineyard with their grandfather Jim and father, Mike. The dream was for a state of the art facility that could allow for every opportunity to implement the winemaking philosophy and style true to the heritage of their family and the wines they love. The architectural mission was to seamlessly link the Dr. Pierce's Barn Home Ranch (a landmark on HWY 101) with the existing estate in Alexander Valley.

Juan Carlos Fernandez, renowned for his work with MacRostie Winery and Aperture Cellars, was enlisted for concept design. Mark and Lisa's vision focused on creating an immersive experience, with front and back window doors offering a panoramic view of the Mazzoni Vineyard, spanning from the South Valley to Cloverdale, showcasing Alexander Valley's vastness. The building, designed by Dave Sigert of Osborn Siegert Architecture, took five years of permitting and ten months to construct. Positioned off HWY 128 for accessibility, the location represents a departure from the original plan near Mike's house. Notably, 10 acres of Merlot were removed for construction in the heart of the estate, signaling a transformative resurrection of the family's second winery and literally cementing the Zialena brand for future generations.

Zialena is located at 21112 River Road in Geyserville, CA. The winery sits on a 120-acre property that has been in the Mazzoni family since 1931. The winemaking facility covers 7,000 square feet with a current production of approximately 2,500 cases. The winery includes 10 open top concrete tanks for fermentation, a first for Alexander Valley. A barrel room, wine laboratory, and the winemaker's blending office surround the concrete tanks and complete the winery. The facility began construction in April 2016 and was completed in February 2017.
